چکیده

Ethoxylated waxes and high molecular weight alcohols can be synthesised from synthetic waxes. The conversions in these syntheses are generally low. A purification process is thus required to ensure good utilization of the reagents and a high purity of the products. Due to the fact that these components are not stable at high temperatures, conventional separation methods are not suitable. Supercritical fluids may offer an attractive method for the purification of these products without the risk of thermal decomposition. In this work the aim was to develop a countercurrent supercritical extraction process that can be used to concentrate the ethoxylated waxes to a high value products and to produce a concentrated stream of intermediates and reagents that can be recycled to the synthesis reactor. Phase equilibrium studies have been conducted on paraffins, high molecular weight alcohols and ethoxylated waxes to scan the ability of various solvents to produce the desired products. Propane may prove to be a very good solvent for this separation. A conceptual flowsheet incorporating heat and work integration is proposed. A pilot plant program was started to test the process concepts and to produce products for customer evaluation.

Method for the determination of natural ester-type gum bases used as food additives via direct analysis of their constituent wax esters using high-temperature GC/MS

Natural ester-type gum bases, which are used worldwide as food additives, mainly consist of wax esters composed of long-chain fatty acids and long-chain fatty alcohols. There are many varieties of ester-type gum bases, and thus a useful method for their discrimination is needed in order to establish official specifications and manage their quality control. Herein is reported a rapid and simple ...

Anatomically realistic ultrasound phantoms using gel wax with 3D printed moulds

Here we describe methods for creating tissue-mimicking ultrasound phantoms based on patient anatomy using a soft material called gel wax. To recreate acoustically realistic tissue properties, two additives to gel wax were considered: paraffin wax to increase acoustic attenuation, and solid glass spheres to increase backscattering. The frequency dependence of ultrasound attenuation was well desc...

Electrochemical characterization of organic coatings for protection of historic steel artifacts

Electrochemical techniques are mainly known in the field of cultural heritage conservation as a tool for the elimination of corrosion layers or the removal of chlorides. However, these techniques are also a valuable tool for assessing the anti-corrosive efficiency of protective coatings. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of different coatings for their use in metallic herita...

The Chemistry of the Lipoids of Tubercle Bacilli

The crude wax obtained from the chloroform extract of the human type of tubercle bacillus, Strain H-37, yielded on purification, as described in a former paper (l), two fractions; viz., a white solid substance designated as purified wax and a soft yellowish salve-like mass which was called soft wax. The present report deals with the analysis of the latter fraction. The work is far from complete...

Pii: S0016-2361(99)00188-x

Wax formation in hydrocarbon fluids at low temperatures is one of the harassing problems faced by the petroleum industry. The prevention of wax formation, the production of diesels more resistant at low temperatures and the design of new and better additives requires a good understanding of the crystallisation behaviour of the paraffin molecules. Better experimental techniques to study the wax ...
